Instructor Bob Perkins     Director: Robert Perkins

Mr. Perkins has been involved with the Marine Education and Training Center for the past 13 years, and Director for the past 10 years.  Prior to this, Mr. Perkins owned his own vessel fabrication and repair business in Honolulu.  Prior to coming to Hawaii over 20-years ago, Mr. Perkins founded and ran California Custom Yachts and Marine Hardware, Inc., a yacht construction and marine hardware supply company located in Redondo Beach, California.  This business catered to construction of high-performance multihulls and (at the time) state-of-the-art rotating wing masts, as well as distribution of marine adhesives, coatings and hardware.

Mr. Perkins received his degrees in Psychology and Behavioral Sciences from the California University System.  He and his family sailed extensively for a number of years on yachts he built.  Additionally, Mr. Perkins holds a United States Coast Guard Captains License, is ACMA (American Composites Manufacturers Association) certified, held membership in SNAME (Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers), and has become involved in integrating curriculum from the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) into the vessel program in order to meet National standards for marine technicians and to offer ABYC training and certificates.

Mr. Perkins is also active with the Polynesian Voyaging Society in helping to train individuals, Captain on Hokule’a and certify crew members for the upcoming World Wide Voyage, aboard the Hokule’a, which is to begin in 2013.

 
         
Instructor Mark Kimura     Instructor: Mark Keala Kimura

Mr. Kimura has been in or around the ocean all of his life.  He grew up along the waterfront in Hawaii Kai marina and was operating power boats for fishing, surfing and free boarding by the age of 11.  Mr. Kimura completed 30+ Hawaiian channel crossings, all before the age of 24.  Some were for fishing and some served as escort for paddlers in bluewater competitions.  Mr. Kimura has held a USCG captain's license since 1995. 

After completing Kaiser High School in 1977, Mr. Kimura enrolled in the automotive program at Windward Community College.  Following this program, he worked for 3 major boat dealerships in Hawaii repairing Johnson, Evinrude and Volvo engines.  He specialized in rigging and putting boats together, including everything from radios to bilge pumps.

In 1996, Mr. Kimura joined the Marine Education Training Center at Honolulu Community College, where he currently teaches the Introduction to Marine Propulsion course in addition to his duties maintaining all school vessels, equipment and machinery.  He is a veritable jack of all trades.

In addition to his work at METC, Mr. Kimura also produces informative segments on fishing tackle and proper boat maintenance for a local television show called "Hawai'i Goes Fishing".  He is well known and respected among the Hawaii marine and fishing community.
 
         
Instructor Red Griffiths-Seewerker     Instructor: Red Griffiths-Seewerker

Mr. Griffiths-Seewerker first worked as a stage carpenter for live theatre and television, where he learned to be a grip on film and television productions. After 15 years in the entertainment industry he moved to the Pacific coast to work with boats. He worked for a salmon fishing lodge on sport fishing boats and realized he needed to learn more on proper repair and maintenance of small vessels. In the fall of 2000 Seewerker enrolled as a student in the Small Vessel Fabrication and Repair program at the METC in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Upon graduating from METC, he worked in the marine industry in Hawaii until in the fall of 2006 when he was then invited to return to Honolulu Community College as an instructor. Mr. Seewerker is a Certified Composite Technician and CCT Instructor through the ACMA.  Mr. Seewerker has helped construct the plugs, molds and hulls for a 46 ft and 57 ft Hawaiian Double Hull Voyaging Canoe and a 22' Hawaiian outrigger surf canoe.

 
Instructor Rich McCreedy     Instructor: Rich McCreedy

Mr. McCreedy has been a part time instructor at the Marine Education and Training Center since 1999. His other work is running his own yacht rigging and commissioning business in Hawaii.  He first came to Hawaii in 1974 by sailing from California.  Mr. McCreedy has sailed thousands of blue water miles and continues to be very active in racing and sailing. He has been the paid  captain of private monohull cruising and racing yachts.

Mr. McCreedy  attended college at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, Moorpark College in   Moorpark, CA,  and Leeward Community  College in Pearl City, HI.  He has been a U.S Sailing Instructor, ASA Sailing Instructor, and a U.S. Coast Guard 100 Ton Aux Sail Licensed Captain. 

Mr. McCreedy  enjoys working with students at METC to pass on some of his knowledge and experience. He also enjoys  being associated with METC and the environment of continuing learning and advancement.
