MARR 154 - Sailboat Rigging
Provides an introduction to the maintenance of a sailboatʻs rigging system.
Emphasis is placed on surveying a sailboatʻs rigging for potential failures
caused by improper installation, corrosion or structural fatigue. Applying
fittings to wire via cold-rolled swage, mechanical (Norseman type) fittings, and
the nicro-press swage will be practiced. Installation of roller furling systems
will be covered. Classroom instruction and tasks performed will be in accordance
with applicable American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Standards and industry
best practices.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of MARR 154, the student will be able to:
- Survey a sailboat's rig from mast step to masthead
- Attach fittings to spars with rivets, machine screws, bolts, and
necessary compression tubes
- Attach fittings onto wire rope with a hydraulic swaging machine,
nicro-press, and mechanical fittings (Norsemen)
- Rig necessary lines to safely go aloft for rig inspection in a
boatswain's chair
- Install and rig a roller furling system
- Replace the running and standing rigging
- Practice tuning of standing rigging
