MARR 130 - Woodworking

• Prerequisite: MARR 122 and MARR 129

Covers the safe and proper use of power and hand woodworking tools. Procedures for sharpening, maintenance, and adjustment of tools are stressed. Rough wood stock is milled and the fabrication of proper wood joints is stressed. Instruction is also provided in the survey and repair of the wooden components of a vessel. Classroom instruction and tasks performed will be in accordance with applicable American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Standards and industry best practices.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of MARR 130, the student will be able to:

• To learn and practice safety rules and regulations of the wood shop.
• Sharpen, tune, and efficiently use woodworking handtools to professional standards.
• Sharpen, adjust, safely and efficiently operate the joiner, thickness planer, bandsaw, table saw, and radial arm saw.
• True wood stock accurately, safely and efficiently.
• Identify species of wood common to boatbuilding and repair. The student will also be introduced to wood technology, lumber grading, detection of defects, and prediction of dimensional stability using a moisture meter.
• Practice fundamentals of marine joinery, including the safe and proper use of adhesives and fastenings.
• Practice interpreting and building from basic working drawings (blueprints).
• Construct shop fixtures and marine joiners tool box.
