MARR 122 - Portable Hand Tools and Machinery

  • Prerequisite: MARR 120

Provides an introduction to hand tools and machinery used in the marine industry. The proper use of machinery such as a hydraulic prop and bearing remover, bead blaster and sandblaster will be demonstrated and practiced. The following woodworking tools will be introduced: table saw, bandsaw, power hand planer, and drill press. Hands-on training is emphasized. The proper utilization, safety procedures, and care of tools are stressed. Classroom instruction and tasks performed will be in accordance with applicable American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Standards and industry best practices. This course includes forklift training and certification.

(60 hrs. lect./lab. per term)

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of MARR 122, the student will be able to:

  • Name and identify portable machinery common to the marine industry and know where they are stored at METC
  • Remove a propeller from a shaft
  • Operate the hydraulic cutless bearing remover.
  • Repack and adjust a standard stuffing box.
  • Service thru-hulls and seacocks.
  • Inspect raw water strainers.
  • Check straightness of propeller shafts.
  • Square engine coupling to shaft.
  • Operate the following woodworking floor tools:
    • Table Saw
    • Floor Belt/Disc Sander
    • Joiner
    • Drill Press
    • Band Saw
  • Bead Blaster/Sand Blaster
  • Hand power tools including power planner, grinder(s), sanders, drill motors, saber saw, circular saw and reciprocating saw.
